Dutch Surveillance Studies

On 19 and 20 June 2025, Erasmus School of Law hosted the symposium on AI-Imaginations, bringing together over 50 participants for two days of critical reflection and exchange. Across keynotes by Selmar Smit (TNO), Prof. Mareile Kaufmann (University of Oslo) and Prof. David Lyon (Queen’s University), and over 25 panel presentations, the symposium explored how AI and algorithms are transforming the domain of public safety. While mainstream narratives often frame AI as a tool for more “efficient” and “effective” law enforcement, this symposium opened space for alternative perspectives—calling for more humane, equitable, and democratic approaches to AI.
